Keeping NYC Hotels Safe from Fire

Posted on June 6th, 2019 by ContentEditor

When we are going about our day to day lives in NYC, I’m guessing that we usually aren’t thinking about all the things that have been provided for our safety. There are many regulations that are required for the express purpose of public safety.  This can be especially reassuring when we are traveling and visiting hotels in the area. While this hasn’t always been true, as in the Winecoff Hotel tragedy in Georgia in 1946, thankfully, safety requirements have vastly improved, including fire safety. Today, there are stringent mandates that hotels must meet in order for them to have Certificate of Occupancy (CO) and meet the FDNY fire safety standards.

Before a hotel can receive a CO, it must be compliant with fire safety regulations in the eyes of the FDNY.  This includes having required items treated with fire retardants. Items such as curtains, carpets, upholstered furniture, drapes, holiday decor, and any combustible material must be soaked in or coated with flame repellent chemicals. This is so that, in the event a fire, these objects will not contribute to the spread or severity of a fire, even though they will still burn. In lieu of flameproofing treatments, a hotel may also elect to purchase inherently flame resistant items and materials.

Another requirement that a hotel must follow is having smoke detectors present in every room. If a fire starts in any room in the building, the other rooms on site will also be alerted and advised to evacuate. Not only that, at the construction level, hotels are required to have firewalls dividing each room; this prevents a fire from moving room to room and enveloping the entire hotel, which would cause it to collapse.  Automatic fire sprinklers, adequate emergency exits, and clearly marked alternate exits are also mandated.

NYC Flameproofing is committed to keeping our city safe. We have the expertise to treat all required items on-site at hotels with flame repellents to the satisfaction of FDNY standards. We know millions of people stay at our city’s hotels, and we are pleased to play a part in keeping them safe from the threat of fire.
