An Extra Layer of Fire Protection: Flame Retardant Paint

Posted on May 6th, 2019 by ContentEditor

It doesn’t take much for an accidental fire to start. A few careless decisions, a few coincidental events, a few actions that we didn’t even know were dangerous. That fast, a few unlucky moments can lead to disaster. The reaches of a fire can be so incredibly devastating, and that’s why we need to make sure we are doing everything in our power to protect human life and property from fire. This happens through typical and commonly-known means such as automatic sprinklers, smoke detectors, and flameproofed materials and decorations. Yet, there is even more protection available.  Flame retardant paints and coatings are another great way to provide even more fire protection.

Available in today’s market are paints and coatings that have Class A and Class B flame spread ratings built into the product (Class A is the most fire resistant). You can purchase these paints in white, black and can also have them custom-mixed to the color of your choice. You can also use these paints as primers, which offer great protection as well.

One of the great things about using paints that have fire retardants built-in is that you can use them on any number of surfaces – not just walls but also on wood and other materials that are typically used for decorative purposes. Additionally, you can custom-pick the sheen you want, which adds a Class B protection for a clear semi-gloss or clear matte finish.

Another excellent aspect is that the clear-coating paint can be used for objects you want to protect but not necessarily paint. Since it goes on clear, it offers protection without the color and can be used on cardboard, plasterboard, greenery, fiberboard and many other types of surfaces. And, these paints are easy to purchase at places like Home Depot.

We usually think of flameproofing as it applies to fabrics and textiles, but through the means of fire retardant paint, you can flameproof virtually any object that can take paint.
