Is There a Difference Between Flameproofing and Fireproofing?

Posted on March 19th, 2019 by ContentEditor

As with any business, there are typically some terms that the general public is not familiar with, certain things that only those in the industry are acquainted with. As a result, particular words or phrases get thrown around and become generally accepted, even if they are inaccurate.  Two words that are often confused with one another in the fire prevention industry are ‘fireproofing’ and ‘flameproofing.’  While they are similar as far as their purposes go – to minimize the damage from fire – the process and materials involved for each are very different.

To put it in a very broad and general sense, the primary difference between the two is the flameproofing has to do with individual objects inside a building and fireproofing has to do with the structure and very building itself.

Now that we’ve stated the main distinction, here are some particulars:

Flameproofing is the treatment of items in a building that are used for artistic enhancement, such as curtains, drapes, fabrics, scenery, wood, etc.  They are treated with fire retardants so that they will not contribute to the spread of a fire.

Fireproofing is the treatment of a building structure during the construction phase.

The purpose of flameproofing is so that a fire doesn’t spread or burn out of control as well as reducing smoke and fire damage to both people and property.

The purpose of fireproofing is the prevention of the collapse of a building during a fire.

Items that have been treated in the flameproofing process with fire retardants are usually visible objects inside the building.

Since the fireproofing process happens during the construction phase, the materials that have been fireproofed are not visible.

With flameproofing, the business owner or lessee of the building space is responsible for flameproofing the objects inside and therefore liable if there is a problem.

With fireproofing, the burden of responsibility falls on the building owner or landlord.

If objects that have been flameproofed have been altered by washing or dry-cleaning, they need to be treated again.

With fireproofing, if the building itself has undergone alterations, fireproofing measures will need to be considered.

Flameproofing can occur at any time since the objects are visible and external to the building itself.

Fireproofing must take place during the building process since it impacts the structural supports and beams.
