FDNY Guidelines for Flameproofing Decorations

Posted on October 3rd, 2018 by ContentEditor

We are visual creatures. We are drawn to beautiful and attractive things and turned off by scenes we determine are unattractive.  Business owners know this and work very hard to make their business establishment aesthetically pleasing to their customers. Decorations and other stylish enhancements contribute to the look of a business, and while beauty is important, equally important is safety – in particular, fire safety.  It is important that the decorations at your business location be properly flameproofed and protected from the risk of fire.  The FDNY has certain regulations pertaining to decorative enhancements, and today we’ll be discussing the requirements for fireproofing these items.

When decorations are involved, the FDNY has set forth specific requirements that must be met.  First, the FDNY states that decorations must be inherently non-combustible.  If they are not, then the items must either be soaked in or coated with fire retardants. Items that would fall into this category would be greens used for decorative purposes as well as artificial Christmas greens.  Additionally, fabric room dividers that go from ceiling to floor but aren’t supported by the floor would also fall into this category as would curtains, drapes, and rugs.

Of course, there are some exceptions to the rules pertaining to flameproofing decorations.  These exemptions have to do with the types of decorations as well as the locations in which they are used.  The FDNY allows certain exceptions in the case of items that are used to decorate private offices in commercial buildings.  Also, items displayed in order to be sold and items in art exhibits would also be exempted from the flameproofing rules.

Certain buildings also allow for other exceptions to the flameproofing rules. Some buildings that may not fall under the same flameproofing regulations would be houses of worship, apartment buildings, shelters, schools, offices, museums, etc.

These regulations may seem a little confusing but NYC Flameproofing is an expert in FDNY regulations, and we can make sure you are complicit with laws regarding fireproofing.

A beautiful business setting is a requirement for success.  Impressions are made by what people see and how a certain setting makes them feel.  However, it’s possible to have a business that is attractive as well as safe for your patrons. In fact, the law requires that it is safe from the threat of fire by the means of flameproofing.
